Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years serves as a valuable professional learning resource guide, focusing on the significance of fostering relationships when working with young children and their families. Its primary purpose is to provide essential support for pedagogy and the development of curriculum and programs within early years initiatives. The framework of "How Does Learning Happen" (HDLH) is built upon four fundamental pillars: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression. These foundational elements are pivotal for children's growth and overall flourishing. They represent a vision for realizing each child's future potential and set the standard for what children should encounter on a daily basis. Remarkably, these four foundations are universal and apply to all children, irrespective of age, ability, culture, language, geography, or setting. They are the innate conditions that children naturally seek for themselves.

How does learning happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years programs focus on educators observing children continuously and documenting them.
With these new programs, educators hope to help children build positive, responsive relationships. It’s a more holistic approach to developing a child’s creative and cognitive development, emphasizing social and emotional growth. Creating environments where children are free to explore and play will support children’s learning in the early years.
